A group of about 60 area business executives and political leaders are asking Delta Air Lines to reconsider canceling flights from its hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to Frankfurt, Germany and London.
In a letter sent today to Delta's chief executive officer Richard Anderson and released by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, the leaders say that the region includes many companies that do business abroad that would be hurt by the cancellation of the flights. In addition, the letter asks that the flights be scaled back to 3-4 times a week instead of cancelled altogether. Those signing the letter included top brass from Fifth Third Bancorp, Kroger, Western & Southern Financial Group, Messer Construction as well as the convention and visitors bureaus from both Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
Delta announced the cutbacks earlier this month, and more could be coming as the financially struggling airline industry continues to pare back due to reduced demand. Delta will release its full fall schedule in a few weeks, and more domestic cuts could be coming. The airport has already lost about half its flights from three years ago as the recession. The redistribution of operations due to Delta's merger with Northwest Airlines also has had an impact.
